Equipment

  • 1 Skillet or Frying Pan (Large, non-stick preferred)
  • 1 Shallow Mixing Bowl (For the egg mixture)
  • 1 Spatula (For flipping the sticks)
  • 1 Knife (For cutting the bread)
  • 1 Cutting Board (For cutting the bread)
  • 1 Whisk (For mixing the egg mixture)
  • 1 Plate (For serving)
  • 1 Paper Towel or Cooling Rack (For draining excess butter)

Ingredients

  • 4 slices thick of Bread (e.g., brioche, challah, or white bread)
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 1/4 cup Milk whole or any milk of choice
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1/2 tsp Ground Cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp Sugar optional, for extra sweetness
  • 2 tbsp Butter for frying
  • 1/4 cup Maple Syrup for serving, optional
  • Powdered Sugar for dusting, optional

Instructions

  • Prepare the bread: Cut the bread slices into 1 to 1.5-inch wide sticks, about 4-5 sticks per slice.
  • Make the egg mixture: In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and sugar (if using) until well combined.
  • Soak the bread sticks: Dip each bread stick into the egg mixture, making sure it’s coated on all sides.
Allow the bread to soak for about 10-15 seconds per side.
  • Fry the French toast sticks: Heat a skillet over medium heat and add butter.
Once melted and sizzling, place the soaked bread sticks into the pan, cooking for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.
  • Serve: Remove the sticks from the pan and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess butter.
Dust with powdered sugar and serve with maple syrup for dipping.

Notes

  • Bread choice: Thick, sturdy bread works best for French toast sticks. Brioche, challah, or day-old white bread give a great texture. Fresh bread may become too soggy.
  • Substitute options: Use plant-based milk (such as almond or oat milk) for a dairy-free version. You can also use egg replacements for a vegan version.
  • Make-ahead tip: If you’re short on time, prepare the sticks the night before and store them in an airtight container. Reheat in a pan or oven for a few minutes to crisp them back up.
  • Toppings: Get creative with toppings like whipped cream, fresh berries, or even chocolate sauce for extra sweetness.
  • Dietary adjustments: Feel free to adjust the sugar content based on your sweetness preference, or try using a sugar substitute if you’re cutting back on sugar.
