Equipment

  • 1 medium saucepan
  • 1 piping bag (or plastic zip-top bag)
  • 1 deep fryer or large pot
  • 1 thermometer (for oil temperature)
  • 1 large spoon or slotted spoon
  • 1 paper towel-lined plate
  • 1 small bowl (for cinnamon sugar mixture)
  • 1 ice cream scoop
  • 1 large plate or serving dish

Ingredients

For the Churros:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil for frying

For the Cinnamon Sugar Coating:

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • For the Ice Cream:
  • 1 pint 2 cups of your favorite ice cream flavor (vanilla, cinnamon, or caramel work great)

Instructions

Prepare the Churro Dough:

  • In a medium saucepan, combine water, butter, salt, and sugar. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
Once boiling, remove from the heat and stir in the flour until smooth.
Let the mixture cool for a few minutes before adding eggs and vanilla extract. Stir until fully combined and smooth.

Heat the Oil:

  • In a deep fryer or large pot, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Use enough oil to submerge the churros.

Fry the Churros:

  • Transfer the dough to a piping bag with a star-shaped nozzle.
Pipe dough into long strips (about 3-4 inches) into the hot oil, frying in batches. Fry until golden brown and crispy (about 2-3 minutes).
Use a slotted spoon to remove them from the oil and place on a paper towel-lined plate.

Coat in Cinnamon Sugar:

  • Mix the granulated sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl. While the churros are still hot, toss them in the cinnamon-sugar mixture to coat them evenly.

Serve with Ice Cream:

  • Once the churros are done, allow them to cool slightly, then serve them with a scoop of ice cream either on top or stuffed inside the churros. Enjoy immediately!

Notes

  • Freshness is Key: Churros are best served fresh for the perfect crispy texture. If making ahead, store them in an airtight container and reheat in the oven to restore crunchiness.
  • Ice Cream Variations: You can experiment with different ice cream flavors like chocolate, caramel, or coffee for a unique twist on the classic.
  • Baking Option: If you prefer not to deep fry, you can bake the churros at 400°F (200°C) for 20-25 minutes, brushing them with melted butter before baking.
