Ingredients
3cups– All-purpose flour
1tsp– Salt
2 ¼tsp– Active dry yeast
1 ¼cups– Warm water110°F/43°C
1 ½cups– Grated cheeseCheddar, mozzarella, or a blend
1tbsp– Olive oiloptional
1tsp– Sugarto activate the yeast
Instructions
Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Stir and let sit for 5-10 minutes, or until the mixture becomes frothy.
Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.
Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Pour the activated yeast mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until a shaggy dough forms.
Add Cheese and Knead: Add the grated cheese to the dough and knead it on a lightly floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.(Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook.)
Let the Dough Rise: Transfer the dough to a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let rise for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.
Shape the Dough: Punch down the dough to release the air, then shape it into a round loaf. Place the loaf on a parchment paper-lined surface to rest while you preheat the Dutch oven.
Preheat the Dutch Oven: Place the Dutch oven (with lid) into the oven and preheat to 475°F (245°C) for at least 30 minutes.
Bake the Bread: Carefully remove the hot Dutch oven from the oven. Place the dough into the preheated pot, cover with the lid, and bake for 30 minutes. Afterward, remove the lid and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
Cool and Serve: Let the bread cool for at least 30 minutes before slicing.
Notes
Cheese Choice: Cheddar provides a nice balance of sharpness and meltability. Feel free to use other cheeses like mozzarella, Parmesan, or Gruyère for a different flavor profile.
Dough Hydration: If the dough is too sticky to handle, add small amounts of flour until it reaches a smooth, elastic consistency. On the other hand, if the dough is too dry, you can add a splash of water to adjust.
Overnight Option: If you'd like to prepare the dough in advance, let it rise overnight in the refrigerator. Just be sure to bring it to room temperature before shaping and baking.
