Equipment

  • 1 Medium-sized saucepan (for cooking oats)
  • 1 wooden spoon for stirring
  • 1 Knife (for chopping apples)
  • 1 Cutting board (for chopping apples)
  • 1 measuring cup (for liquids)
  • 1 Measuring spoons (for cinnamon and sweeteners)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Rolled oats
  • 1 ½ cups Milk or dairy-free alternative like almond or oat milk
  • 1 large Apple peeled, cored, and diced
  • 1 tsp Ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp Honey or maple syrup optional
  • 1 tbsp Butter optional, for added richness
  • Pinch of salt optional
  • Toppings optional: Nuts, raisins, yogurt, chia seeds, or fresh berries

Instructions

  • Prepare the apples: Peel, core, and dice the apple into small pieces. Set aside.
  • Cook the oats: In a medium saucepan, add the rolled oats and milk (or dairy-free alternative).
  • Stir occasionally and bring to a simmer over medium heat.
  • Let it cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the oats are soft and have absorbed most of the liquid.
  • Add apples and cinnamon: Once the oats are cooked, add the diced apples, ground cinnamon, and a pinch of salt if using.
  • Stir everything to combine and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes to warm the apples.
  • Sweeten and finish: Add honey or maple syrup if you like a sweeter version of the dish.
  • Stir in butter for a creamier texture, if desired.
  • Serve: Spoon the oats into bowls and top with your favorite toppings like chopped nuts, dried fruit, or a dollop of yogurt.
  • Enjoy warm!

Notes

  • Apple varieties: Feel free to use any apple variety you like.
Tart apples like Granny Smith give a nice contrast to the sweetness of the oats, while sweeter apples like Fuji will make the dish even sweeter.
  • Dairy-free option: For a vegan version, use almond milk, coconut milk, or oat milk instead of regular milk.
  • Extra protein: You can boost the protein content by adding a scoop of protein powder or topping your oats with nuts, seeds, or nut butter.
  • Consistency: Adjust the consistency by adding more milk for creamier oats or reducing the liquid for thicker oats.
  • Overnight oats: For a no-cook version, mix the oats, apples, cinnamon, and milk together the night before and refrigerate overnight. In the morning, just stir and enjoy cold or heated.
